Present Rail routes in Sri Lanka. Dotted line shows previously existed route before 1984

Sri Lanka is a small island in the Indian ocean. The network was introduced by the British in 1864, presently owned by the Government of Sri Lanka the network consist of 1,449 km of broad gauge (5 feet 6 inches) and 59 km Narrow gauge (2 feet 6 inches currently converted to broad gauge). Sri Lanka is proud to own some of the most scenic rail routes in the world.

Presently the Sri Lankan railway has only diesel locomotives on their roster with limited steam locomotives running on special tourist excursions. Dieselization began in the mid 50's by former General Manager of Railways B.D Rampala MBE.

Sri Lanka has not yet decided to move on to electrification, even though there are many proposals.

This website was started purely in dedication to all locomotives serving our Island. These beasts-of-burden haul millions of commuters throughout the year providing a thankless service to the nation.

Sadly only few individuals recognize the great service rendered by these extraordinary machines. Although Sri Lankan railway is plagued with all sorts of problems, highlighting technical shortcomings and safety concerns are beyond the scope of this website.

Special Thanks goes out to the SLR staff who goes beyond their call of duty with lack of spares, limited funds to keep these wonderful locomotives running beyond their service period.

May all the locomotives currently serving and served Sri Lanka achieve sainthood in locoland!!
